A stud of a President – Sarkozy the ultimate charmer
As we approach the time of the year when good will and consideration weigh hard on our moral conscience, it seems Nicolas Sarkozy has been granted the greatest Christmas present of them all.
After six months of playing out the role of an omnipresent President who flies round the world saving French charity workers from Chad while rubbing shoulders with some of America’s gold tinted Business men, he has reportedly been seen in the company of Carla Bruni, a world famous supermodel, during a trip to Disneyland Paris.
Many of the French here are expressing their lack of support for a president who flirts his way round the political ball park, hangs out with celebrity personalities and, now, appears to be dating one of the most beautiful super models the world has even seen.
Others are more sympathetic towards the president; after all he has just been through a long and tiresome divorce with his former wife Cecilia.
The son of a Hungarian immigrant, Sarkozy has had to work extremely hard to reach where he is today; hence his neo-liberal politics which hold effort and hard graft to be the sole bearer of merit. Sarkozy dropped out of his degree program at Science Po, one of France’s most prestigious universities. Instead, he put all his effort in to more “practical” skills like public speaking and turning on the charm when he needs it. He has been quoted saying that reading and philosophizing is an idle pastime which prevents progress in society. He would much rather take a brisk early morning jog than open up a book written by one of France's many documented philosophers.
His parents came from modest backgrounds also having to struggle through life’s obstacles to give their many children a chance at attaining bigger and better things.
In a recent survey published by Le Parisien newspaper, 45% of French people thought Sarkozy exposed too much of his private life to the public. 49% said they thought he revealed a suitable amount or not enough. It seems, the French nation is split over Sarkozy’s stud-like behavior whereby he has no shame in making public the fruits of his success.
In a country where class differences are still firmly integrated into society’s ideological make-up, people who show off their success with pride often serve in stirring up sentiments of resentment and jealousy. To be a frimeur, or show-off is very bad form indeed.
Part of Sarkozy’s magnetism and professional success is no doubt linked to his ability to charm those around him. Pictures taken alongside Angela Merkel nearly always show the French President touching her in a playful manner under the full glare of the world press. I don’t seem to remember any previous French President conducting himself in such an intrepid fashion.
All of this has led to the fact that Nicholas Sarkozy, just weeks after his break-up with Cecilia, will perhaps be waking up next to the luscious Miss Bruni on Christmas morning. All he has to do now is distribute the nation’s wealth so that the poorest citizens can see brighter rays of light at the end of the tunnel, bolster up the French attitude towards working so to ignite the French economy back into action and tone down his radical purges towards Arab nations like Iran. If he does this he’ll surely become a superman president with a drop-dead gorgeous lady on his arm.
