Le Bois de Vincennes – harmony amidst urban bustle
The rapid pace to life in any major city is a phenomenon whose consequences can very often place huge pressures on one’s daily routine. It is therefore nice to know that a huge expanse of idyllic wilderness is only a ten minute walk from my newfound place of residence – a 32m ² apartment situated in the far east corner of central Paris.
My ability to embrace the stress of inner city living has in recent times significantly lowered its threshold; that is unless I am drowning my stress drenched sorrows in the Parisian pastimes of smoking, drinking, eating and indeed reading. To my greatest pleasure, the Bois de Vincennes is an area of Paris which provides the perfect surroundings in which to jog, aimlessly wonder, row a boat, skim pebbles, drink coffee, have a picnic and generally reacquaint oneself with the notion of relaxation.
It is exactly this sort of area that the thousands of tourists visiting Paris every year choose to neglect – or rather fail to acknowledge the existence of. The summer brings out pony rides and ice cream stalls. The winter transforms the park into a scene from The Witch the Lion and the Wardrobe.
In the east quarter of the park, a series of Buddhist huts are purposely yet haphazardly assembled next to one of the lakes, providing refuge for any soul seeking Parisians with too much spare time on their hands.
Sauntering along the worn pathways with my girlfriend, the demons of city life lift themselves from my shoulders leaving me pleasantly reposed. Thus, the following day in the bowels of the Paris metro proved to be a much more bearable scenario.
Le Bois de Vincennes, is far from the elegance of Les Jardins de Luxembourg, yet its simplicity and undistinguished reputation is exactly the type of park which can sooth the pains and strains of inner city life.

Yet I love all types of park, depends on the mood which one I prefer at the time.
